Congratulations to the Wicahpi Olowan Music Program, located at the Oglala Lakota Artspace and made possible by @1stpeoplesfund and its close partnership with @playingforchangefoundation .
This compilation features Oceti Sakowin artists, mainly Oglala Lakota, who had utilized the studio up to early 2024. This could not be made possible without those artists, producers and engineers who all contributed their beautiful works to this project. Thank you, Wopila, for representing together in a great way and proving the impact & importance of music access for all. Other prominent engineers/producers on this project and in this program during this time were @terrancejade3 @stellastandingbear @tianaanpowin_st & @santeewitt but cannot forget the 20+ artists who breathed life into the studio either 💜🙏
As you can tell from the release date, we’re due for a volume 2! But beyond that, the only thing I really have to say is that it is my sincere hope, that all tribes can one day have studios, plethoras of alternative venues and ways for us to all connect across turtle island. Work our own network that operates within each tribe's values.
Music, regardless of topic, time, genre or even intent, is sacred. I truthfully believe we can find better things in this world through a conscious effort of supporting all music. Each of these artists, and so too the ones who’ve come to the studio after them, deserve beaded medallions. Once again, I thank them and the orgs for their contributions, and to all the community who has supported these artists, the artspace and the studio.
And of course, a sincere Wopila to the @nativemusicawards for recognizing this compilation in such an awesome way. Was unreal to hear last night! Thank you to those who made it possible for us to enter in the first place.

Featuring Juliana Brown Eyes (our recent Artist in Residence), Tokata Iron Eyes, Cranston Joel (@cranstonjoel_ on Instagram) & dropping in from Crow Creek Dakota Oyate, the band Sovern Keith Heth III Memphis Bell Nebulous Ross & they told me another member is coming!

One day, I’m home meeting new listeners/supporters, then running into them again at Eagle Stop for TJ’z lol! The next day, I’m in a random rural spot where no one knows me, making half the room excited/happy and the other half uncomfortable/awkward 🤣💜🙏

I’ve thought a lot about this, maybe I’m still thinking. I’m not entirely for sure yet, but this may be the final time I ever use facepaint.
Today I am performing for the Rock The Rez youth girls & LGBT music camp at the Oglala Lakota Artspace . I’m going to express to them how I navigate this world with music & my MPC, do a live face painting demonstration for the first time, and hopefully encourage them that they are amazing young people w/ ability to do great things.
Released this song in 2017, but have been sharing it out every year since. “No Custers” means be aware, Custer’s spirit lives on. Deceit, fake allies, even within our own. It’s actually easy to be Custer, he was an ally who gained trust only to eventually expose his ego and fall by us and our Cheyenne & Arapaho relatives. Look at what happens still, not just to us, but especially our relatives in the Middle East, Palestine, Mexico, South America, across man-made borders and documented by undocumented invaders since well before 1492.
Today, I’m performing for Rock The Rez’s lunch session as part of their youth camp. It feels wonderful to celebrate the day with that.
This weekend at Oglala Lakota Artspace : one of the first of the new trainings for performing artists. This means music, too! Attend this weekend - for those who attend both days, I’ll throw in a free usb drive that has all my *personal* planning templates & a list of radio stations and newspaper emails that I send press releases to. Don’t matter if you’re completely new or well-established, these trainers are good ppl with something for everyone!
